Draft: small fixes to report gen plotting

Working to address #187. Currently not ready; just in draft for organizational purposes.

Depends on !208 (closed) (contains same changes plus additions) and will not be marked as ready until that code is reviewed/merged, at which point the diff on this MR should become much shorter.
