Rename categories with direct mass references
Here is a short summary from Tuesday's CBC Call discussion of https://dcc.ligo.org/LIGO-G2200044:
For most pipelines, the low-latency categorization is based on whether a component is below 3 solar masses. This is a necessary but not sufficient criteria for most neutron star classification statements(also discussed in December Low-Latency call). The Extreme Matter group has proposed the following renaming:
- BNS renamed to "both<3Msun"
- Description: "Probability that both objects are lighter than 3 solar masses in the source frame."
- NSBH renamed to "secondary<3Msun"
- Description: "Probability that only the secondary is lighter than 3 solar masses in the source frame."
- BBH renamed to "neither<3Msun"
- Description: "Probability that neither object is lighter than 3 solar masses in the source frame."
We realize this would require back-end infrastructure changes as well as propagation to the alerts format and user guide. Please let me know if I should try to suggest these in more detail for e.g. #264 (closed) .
As a small complication, MBTA's low-latency pipeline per @benoit.mours plans to fold in an up-to-date NS/BH boundary and rate background instead of using a 3.0 boundary. This is a different classification than other pipelines are planning and so should be named differently in alerts. The current BNS/NSBH/BBH naming would be fine for that, if it is possible to have two schemes.
