Make sure core examples run without error

Colm Talbot requested to merge fix-core-examples into master

After !1031 (merged) I decided to make sure all those examples actually run and a few of them didn't.

This MR should fix them. The core examples also run as part of the integration tests (other than the 15d Gaussian that is slow).
