Docs for recent tags

!578 (merged) broke the docs job for master as it isn't able to deal with the function I added for some reason. I just took out that function and replaced it with something that will work on the CI.

I also noticed that the regex for matching tags didn't pick up recent tags so I adapted it a little.

The docs for master aren't building in the CI because that branch has a faulty conf.py file, but it built for this branch.
